GREAT, VERY LOCAL, PUBS FOR EATING AND DRINKING

THE WHITE HORSE, EASTON

Our ‘local’. Whether you want to pop in for a refreshing drink or have a tasty lunch or supper, you’ll be assured of a very warm welcome.

This beautiful 16th century pub offers an appetising menu of proper pub classics made with the finest seasonal, local produce and some delicious dishes with an Asian twist.

It has a lovely garden for when the sun is shining, a great selection of local ales and a superb wine list. Best of all, it’s just a short walk from The Farmstead with a path from the lodges leading directly to the pub.

THE CHEQUERS INN, KETTLEBURGH

Newly refurbished and almost on the doorstep, this pub is perfect for a quick pint or glass of wine alongside some delicious bar snacks.

If lingering longer there’s a great menu, including an extensive vegan selection and always interesting specials. It’s also open on Mondays which is a bonus as many pubs in the area close on this day of the week.

THE UFFORD CROWN, UFFORD

A friendly family-run pub in the charming village of Ufford. There’s a beautiful restaurant and down to earth cosy bar with a fine selection of local drinks.

You’ll want to try everything on their extensive menu and Sunday lunches are legendary. Add to that a sunny terrace and garden, a perfect place to spend a couple of lazy hours.

THE STATION, FRAMLINGHAM

On the road into the historic town of Framlingham, you’ll find this busy, popular pub. With good, freshly prepared meals, and a great selection of ales. Booking is recommended. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, they fire up the pizza oven. Enjoy your food in the lively courtyard or why not take one back to the comfort of your lodge?

GREAT PUBS AND RESTAURANTS A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD

THE SHIP AT DUNWICH

A few minutes stroll from dog-friendly Dunwich beach on the Heritage Coast, you will find The Ship. Relaxed, informal and everything a coastal pub should be. The food is simple, hearty and well cooked, the ambience friendly and welcoming. There’s a great bar area, courtyard and newly landscaped garden in which to relax and enjoy a very decent fish and chips.

THE ANCHOR, WALBERSWICK

Head to Walberswick where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s a charming village which is becoming very popular with second-homers, for good reason.

The Anchor sits on an acre of garden overlooking the beach huts, it’s family-friendly, with a few dog-friendly tables and a great spot to enjoy an excellent meal. They even bake their own bread daily, which is for sale at the bar.

On Fridays and Saturdays there’s a special seafood menu alongside pub favourites. Definitely one to visit.

THE RAMSHOLT ARMS, RAMSHOLT

Under the same ownership as The Ufford Crown, this is an ideal option on a sunny day. Situated right on the banks of the river Deben, tables inside are bookable, but are ‘first come, first served’ on the terrace.

Popular with families, holidaymakers and sailors, there’s a small beach and a little crab fishing jetty right in front of the pub. Food-wise, you can expect to enjoy a variety of fresh locally caught seafood, sharing platters and a real American barbeque at weekends.

Bear in mind, opening times vary according to the season, so do check before visiting.

GREAT PUBS AND RESTAURANTS FOR MORE FORMAL DINING

THE GREYHOUND, PETISTREE

This historic Grade 2 listed village inn features in a recent list of top 100 Gastropubs, serving up super fresh, super seasonal fare.

Don’t come here expecting burgers and pies, the offerings are refined, creative and exquisitely presented. You might expect the atmosphere to feel a bit stuffy but far from it.

Locals with muddy boots are more than welcome at the bar and dogs wait expectantly underneath tables for falling morsels. It’s well-worth visiting.

THE SUFFOLK, ALDEBURGH

Another ex-London resident, George Pell, who owned the Soho institution L’Escargot, has recently opened this warm and polished restaurant in the heart of Aldeburgh.

Suffolk’s plentiful produce is evident throughout the heavily seafood influenced menu, all freshly sourced and beautifully cooked. If you don’t fancy a full meal, make the most of the lovely roof terrace and have a glass of fizz and a few delicious sharing plates.

Booking is definitely recommended in the summer and on weekends throughout the year, particularly now that is has been heartily recommended by Jay Rayner in The Observer.

THE UNRULY PIG, BROMESWELL

Winner of many prestigious accolades including number one in the UK Top 50 Gastropub awards, The Unruly Pig is definitely one to put on your list.

In a beautiful old building, housing an impressive art collection, the welcome is warm and the interior cosy. More restaurant than pub, the menu changes monthly but each day there are some delicious, local, specials. Sunday lunches are highly acclaimed.

There’s a lovely outside terrace for long summer lunches and warmer evenings. Booking in advance recommended.

WATSON & WALPOLE, FRAMLINGHAM

This popular Italian restaurant is situated in the heart of Framlingham but don’t expect standard high-street pasta/pizza fare here, the food here is more thoughtful, refined and authentic. Menus change monthly and are very much focused on seasonality.

The owners have also recently opened an Italian bar, Beviamo, just behind the restaurant and The Ice Cream Shop, opposite Framlingham Castle, ensures something for everyone.

Operating for over 20 years and situated on the A12, the vision of this café has always been to provide better and more wholesome food than the travelling public might expect – no pre-packaged sandwiches and pies here.

TWO MAGPIES BAKERY, ALDEBURGH, SOUTHWOLD, WOODBRIDGE AND DARSHAM

The fact that there are now four branches of this bakery in Suffolk (and three more in Norfolk) is testament to its popularity.
